Happy Safer Internet Day

by teamgpt February 10, 2009
written by teamgpt

Today is the safer internet day! This is an initiative to raise awareness about the needs of young Web surfers organized by the European Safer Internet Program in more than 60 countries. In essence, the growth of social networks (in these days we hear much of the published images of children by their families on Facebook) has placed emphasis on issues related to privacy and the adequacy of the shared content on the web which summed up the potential dangers of sharing a socially unconscious information.

Here is a nice video about safer internet day:

Please consider suicide at a later moment – wtf?

by teamgpt January 10, 2009
written by teamgpt

We previously told you about a site called seppukkoo – a ritual suicide for your online avatar. Now, there’s another site on the web and it’s called web 2.0 suicide machine.

Like Seppukkoo, web 2.0 suicide machine can help you kill all your social-networking profiles like twitter, Facebook, linkedIn and myspace too with just a click. Facebook sent them a legal notice to shut it down.

Now when you try visiting web2.0 – Suicide machine, it asks us to “please consider suicide at a later moment due to server maintenance”? WTF?

suicide machine wtf?

Have you tried the web2.0 suicide machine yet? If you haven’t, then get connected to me on Facebook and Twitter… and if you have bid adieu to your online profile, may your virtual avatar rest in peace :D

How to: Create an Orkut share button for your website

by teamgpt January 10, 2009
written by teamgpt

Orkut is surely catching up with Facebook and Twitter fast. I was just trying to find some share buttons online and guess what I found? An Orkut share button…. Yeah, just like the Facebook share button, there is an Orkut share button too…

Here is a step by step guide on how to add an Orkut share button to your website:

  1. Go to http://www.google.com/webelements/orkutshare/
  2. Customize your Orkut share button
  3. Grab the auto generated code and add it to your website\blog’s template… :)

Now when you click on the share button it would automatically opens the share screen for you to share the site. The title and the URL is automatically generated according to your settings on step #2.

Here is how the Orkut share screen looks like:

orkut share button
This is when you click on the share button.

orkut share on stream
And this is how it shows on the new Orkut stream!

Another interesting thing to notice is that the Orkut promote uses Oauth URL callback from http://promote.orkut.com/oauth_callback[Unique-id]..

What are your thoughts about this new feature in Orkut? Are you going to use it as much as Facebook or Twitter share buttons? Post your comments below and let me know.

Google goes real-time after all the socializing and partnerships!

google realtime search
Bing integrated the twitter results into its search results first. And now according to Google, realtime search is now live (Whoa, they did it too)….

Google gets information from twitter, from more than a dozen new search technologies that enable us to monitor more than a billion documents and process hundreds of millions of real-time changes each day. Google also made it official that it has now partnered with Facebook, MySpace, FriendFeed, Jaiku and Identi.ca — along with Twitter, which was announced a few weeks ago.

From the Google blog:

Our real-time search enables you to discover breaking news the moment it’s happening, even if it’s not the popular news of the day, and even if you didn’t know about it beforehand. For example, in the screen shot, the big story was about GM’s stabilizing car sales, which shows under “News results.” Nonetheless, thanks to our powerful real-time algorithms, the “Latest results” feature surfaces another important story breaking just seconds before: GM’s CEO stepped down.

If you want to see real-time search first look video:

Techcrunch also has a nice write up about Google’s new realtime search technology! BUT it’s funny that they compare Google’s realtime search to the speed of light :). You can find some screenshots, videos and more information on the latest techcrunch’s post here.

Google Doodle: Popeye (EC Segar)

by teamgpt December 9, 2008

google doodle popeye

Elzie Crisler Segar (December 8, 1894 – October 13, 1938) was an American cartoonist, best known as the creator of Popeye, a character who first appeared in 1929 in his newspaper comic strip Thimble Theatre.

Segar was born and raised in Chester, Illinois, a small town near the Mississippi River. The son of a handyman, his earliest work experiences included assisting his father in house painting and paper hanging. Skilled at playing drums, he also provided musical accompaniment to films and vaudeville acts in the local theater, where he was eventually given the job of film projectionist. At age 18, he decided to become a cartoonist. He worked hard on a correspondence course in cartooning from W.L. Evans, of Cleveland, Ohio, in which he had invested $20. In the September 1934 issue of Better Homes and Gardens Segar wrote that it cost him $100. He said that after work he “lit up the oil lamps about midnight and worked on the course until 3am.”
