Your wish has been granted; Gmail now helps you auto unsubscribe from mailing lists.

gmail logo

Gmail has rolled out a feature to try and streamline the process. Now, when you click the “Report Spam” button on an email, you’ll get an “Unsubscribe and report spam” option that will actually remove you from the mailing list as opposed to simply moving the email to your spam folder. Gmail also says that this doesn’t work for everything yet, and when I tried it on a couple of newsletters in my mailbox, I didn’t see the option. They are trying to get more senders to support the feature.

gmail unsubscribe auto

More details on their blog:

“We’re actively encouraging senders to support auto-unsubscribe — we think 100% should. We won’t provide the unsubscribe option on messages from spammers: we can’t trust that they’ll actually unsubscribe you, and they might even send you more spam. So you’ll only see the unsubscribe option for senders that we’re pretty sure are not spammers and will actually honor your unsubscribe request. We’re being pretty conservative about which senders to trust in the beginning; over time, we hope to offer the ability to unsubscribe from more email.”

It’s a nice feature from Gmail, but the problem seems to be with the email senders, who automatically opt you into mailing lists and make it intentionally difficult to remove yourself. Unfortunately, that’s not something that’s likely to change anytime soon, but I must say, good try Google :).

Geek – What does that mean?

The word geek is a slang term, noting individual as “a peculiar or otherwise odd person, especially one who is perceived to be overly obsessed with one or more things including those of intellectuality, electronics etc….

I had to write this :D ….  It’s really fascinating to just read about it…  Similarly, the site geeks.com too lists 29 reasons that explain why geeks are sexy, smart and why I want to be a Geek… Here are top 10 from the same….  go on, read it:

  • Geeks win every science fair: What 6th grade Geek can’t build a semi-nuclear conductor?
  • Geeks are technically proficient: What isn’t sexy about being able to defrag a hard drive or install RAM?
  • Geeks are well-behaved: Can you sit in front of a computer for hours? (Most of the time par-taking in harmless activity)
  • Geeks are better than blockbuster: We can get you the latest movies on DVD. (And we only have to break 13 copyright laws)
  • Geeks are handymen: Who do you think can fix those pesky, frustrating machines called computers better than anyone else?
  • Geeks are innovative: The iPhone, laptops, iPods, HDTV, PS3, are just the tip of the iceberg of what we are capable of.
  • Geeks Have Job Security: Who do you think the FBI and NSA turn to when they need help with Internet security?
  • Geeks have fun hobbies: Who doesn’t like to play Halo 3 all day?
  • Geeks make good money: Especially if you work for Google, Microsoft or…, it’s a long list.
  • Geeks are diverse: Comic books, PC games, C++ programming OH MY!!

Google image search now searches under Creative Common license

by teamgpt July 9, 2011
written by teamgpt

google image search

Google officially launched the ability to filter search results using Creative Commons licenses inside the Image Search tool. It is now easy to restrict your Image Search results to find images which have been tagged with the CC licenses, so that you can find content from across the web that you can share, use, and even modify. Searches are also capable of returning content under other licenses, such as the GNU Free Documentation License, or images that are in the public domain.

To filter by CC search, go to Google’s advanced Image Search page and select the options you’d like in the “Usage rights” section. Your results will be restricted to images marked with CC licenses or other compatibly licensed photos.

This is a great step forward for the future of image search on the web, so good job to the Google team on  implementation CC!

10 tips to stay safe while using orkut – do’s and don’ts !!!

by teamgpt May 9, 2011
written by teamgpt
orkut

Fraudulent sites sometimes try to take advantage of Orkut users like you and me by positing links to malware\phishing sites to trap users.

To help make sure that everyone is able to have a fun and safe experience on the site, I thought I’d share a few quick tips that I’ve picked up during my experience. Here are the tips below:

  • Create a tough password:
  • While “yourname123” is always a tempting password to create, keep in mind that it’s just as easy for a malicious user to figure out as it is for you to remember. Try creating a password that involves a combination of letters and numbers that no one could easily guess, even if they know basic details about who you are. The same goes for your security question (the question that pops up if you forget your password) – you should try your best to pick a question that only you can answer.

  • Keep your private details private:
  • Never share your Orkut username and password with friends or on a site not authenticated by Google. Orkut does not allow any external sites to store Orkut login information and will never request that you enter it anywhere outside of the Orkut login page. To be on the safe side, always check that your address bar reads “https://www.google.com/accounts/ServiceLogin?…..” and nothing else when sharing your Orkut user name and password.

  • Leave the coding to the engineers:
  • Never copy and paste code into your address bar, no matter what it claims to be able to do. Typically these scripts actually send messages (in your name!) to your friends trying to trick them into giving up their personal information.

  • Downloads and Orkut don’t mix:
  • Never download any file off of Orkut, especially those that end in ‘.vb’ or ‘.exe’. These files are often viruses that can infect your computer and start sending thousands of spam messages on your behalf. Sites offering special Orkut themes or skins are particularly risky.

  • External links? Think twice:
  • Links to sites outside of orkut that appear in scraps or posts have not been verified by the orkut team, and could lead you to harmful sites. We’d recommend only clicking on links that go to trusted sites or those that are from other orkut users you know well.

  • Anti-Virus software is always a good call:
  • Even the most conscientious orkuteer can fall victim to a phishing attack, so it’s important to always be alert and prepared. Regularly scanning your computer with updated anti-virus software is a great way to keep your computer secure. Haven’t installed anti-virus software on your computer yet? Check out Google Pack.

  • For new orkut features, check out apps!:
  • Sometimes an unofficial site may claim to offer special orkut features, but these sites are known for taking over orkut accounts and directly violate our Terms of Service. If you’re looking for fun new orkut functionality, check out the thousands of applications that we have available. All of these apps have been built by talented developers according to standards that we believe will help to keep you safe online. If you haven’t visited the app directory recently, take a look– you might be surprised at how much cool stuff you find.

  • Fake login pages – email address and password hacking:
  • Be aware of sites like PowerScraps, Way2SMS etc. (Official Orkut forum suggests not to use these two sites). These sites might store\steal\share your passwords and email address to hack\spam your inboxes.

  • Orkut Applications:
  • Not all Orkut applications are Good! Even though the Orkut engineers review the application before approving them, applications might change how they work and spam you and your friends. You need to know that when you add applications, your public profile information* will be shared through the application with:

    – The application developer
    – Your friends who receive your updates on Orkut
    – Any other viewer or user of the application, whether on orkut.com or another website where the application appears.

  • Found something suspicious?
  • If you find abuse (spam, nudity, or malicious content), Report them. Orkut follows strict removal policies. Orkut security and abuse team will review these cases and remove any violating content\material. Visit the help center for more information.

Well… now that you have read all these tips make sure you follow them and you should be 110% safe on Orkut :D …. Stay Safe…

Google Doodle: Big Ben 150 years

Big Ben’s 150th anniversary year. Big Ben is the nickname for the great bell of the clock at the north-eastern end of the Palace of Westminster in London. The nickname is often also used to refer to the clock and the clock tower.[2] This is the world’s largest four-faced, chiming clock and the third largest free-standing clock tower in the world. It celebrated its 150th birthday in May 2009, (the clock itself first ticking on 31st May) during which celebratory events are planned…
