Google Reader Play – Don’t read, just play your favorite content like TV

by teamgpt March 10, 2012
written by teamgpt

Google with a clear mission to make RSS reading more attractive has announced the Google Reader Play – a new visual tool that can change the browsing experience on the web.

google reader play like tv

Although this new feature is in experimental stage, the new interface shows only one new item at a time when at full screen, focusing on images, videos, maps and other attractions to “fill the eyes.”

“In essence, Reader play is a different view of the Reader”, “It is designed to be an easy and fun to browse through interesting items, while Reader is much more customizable to organize your feeds.  says Garrett Wu, product manager for Reader.

Basically, the Reader does not require anyone to subscribe to feeds. In automatic mode, it puts the contents of your “Recommended Item” on the top.

From the first navigation, the content is tailored to the individual taste of each user. For this, it is necessary for Internet users to interact with what they see by clicking on the items “Like”, “Add Star” and “Share.”

For many, this new standard of viewing the content is ideal for the TV format and even more so for the tablets, especially because it is fast, simple and visually appealing. Also, there are rumors that this feature is going to be completely awesome on the Apple iPad (now that apple is not on the Google’s list of competitors), while reading news.

You can test it by visiting – http://www.google.com/reader/play.

Facebook to Rollout Geographical Targeting in April

by teamgpt March 10, 2012
written by teamgpt

Facebook is preparing to send out an update for the entire user base to give permission to share their geographical locations. According to several sources, the popular social network Facebook has been working on this new additional feature from about a year ago but is being very cautious about implementing it. Facebook does not want the new feature to cause any technical problems to the targeted Ads function.

We also hear that this feature will be available from April on Facebook as it’s rumored in the f8 conference (which happens every year for developers). The meet also hosts an API for third parties, engaging applications to share this information.
So far the company has remained silent and one of its spokesmen Meredith Chin said, the company is still not ready to give information regarding this new service because they are still testing and adapting things.

It is clear that the service still wants to attract more users than losing the existing ones. A few weeks ago, Facebook reached 400 million users mark and also became the second most visited site in the U.S., after Google.

What is GEO-Tagging\Targetting? Here is a funny image from XKCD.

Meanwhile, rival Twitter in December bought Mixer Labs, a company that will support you to Geotag the tweets. The CEO of Twitter, Evan Williams, said at the time that the new acquisition of the company will allow users show their Twitter followers from where they are writing their tweets.

Eye Tracking shows, Google Real-time Search Results are Rarely Noticed

by teamgpt March 10, 2012
written by teamgpt

According to an eye-tracking study by OneUpWeb, users of the Google search engine ignore the results in real time from Google.

The study consisted of 44 people divided into two groups: those seeking information and those who wanted to buy a product. 73% of the volunteers had never heard of the results in real time. The study aimed to answer three main questions:

  1. The average user of the browser, you recognize and understand the results in real time
  2. Consumers, “use the results in real time
  3. What do the consumers of such results

The results:

  • Only 25% of consumers used and viewed the results in real time, compared with 47% of those seeking information.
  • Most participants were indifferent to the results in real time.

From the graph, users only take into account the window of real-time results of Twitter. Maybe better if Google place it higher on the page, but I think the results would be similar. The fact that there is not much importance given to these results could indicate that you the profile is ranked low or Google is aware of the devaluation of the quality of the results due to real-time search results.

Gmail Emails now in 5 Indian languages

by teamgpt March 9, 2012
written by teamgpt

When you compose a new mail in Gmail, you should now see an icon with an Indian character, as the screenshot below shows. This feature is enabled by default for Gmail users in India.  If you do not see this function enabled by default, you will need to go the “Settings” page and enable this option in the “Language” section.

When you click the Indian languages icon, you can type words the way they sound in English and Gmail will automatically convert the word to its Indian local language equivalent.  For example, if a Hindi speaker types “namaste” we will transliterate this to “??????.” …Google currently supports five Indian languages — Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam — and you can select the language of your choice from the drop-down list next to the icon.

Google team has built this new feature using Google’s transliteration technology, which is also available on Google India Labs, Orkut, Blogger and iGoogle. And Google hopes you find this feature useful to communicate with those of your friends and family who prefer to write in their native language, and it will be available soon to businesses and schools using Google Apps.  Now back to replying to all those Hindi emails I got from my family and friends today!
