Google Transit: Plan a trip using public transportation

by teamgpt July 9, 2013
written by teamgpt
google maps

Couple of days ago I told you guys about planning your trips inside the city a new product in google labs. Here is some thing similar called the the Transit Layer in Google maps and its a part of Google Transit. Whereas the main Google Transit product has the goal to provide full schedule information and routing, the objective of the Transit Layer is to overlay lines visually on Google Maps. Think of a virtual metro map on top of Google Maps — even when we don’t have itinerary planning available, Google wants you to be able to see public transit options that are available. The main goal is to be able to offer transit information as an alternative to driving directions wherever possible.

Use Google Maps to

* Get step-by-step transit directions
– in your web browser
– on your mobile phone
* Find transit stops in your area
* View station information and schedules

What’s more? More than 413 cities are covered. Plan your trip using Google maps now and enjoy  :)

Here is a quick video:

Google Doodle: Pablo Neruda

by teamgpt July 9, 2013
written by teamgpt
google doodle neruda

Pablo Neruda (July 12, 1904 – September 23, 1973) was the pen name and, later, legal name of the Chilean writer and politician Neftalí Ricardo Reyes Basoalto. Neruda assumed his pen name as a teenager, partly because it was in vogue, partly to hide his poetry from his father, a rigid man who wanted his son to have a “practical” occupation. Neruda’s pen name was derived from Czech writer and poet Jan Neruda; Pablo is thought to be from Paul Verlaine. With his works translated into many languages, Pablo Neruda is considered one of the greatest and most influential poets of the 20th century..

Nikola Tesla (10 July 1856 – 7 January 1943) was an inventor and electrical engineer. He is frequently cited as one of the most important contributors to the birth of commercial electricity, a man who “shed light over the face of Earth,”[2] and is best known for his many revolutionary developments in the field of electricity and magnetism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Tesla’s patents and theoretical work formed the basis of modern alternating current (AC) electric power systems, including the polyphase power distribution systems and the AC motor, with which he helped usher in the Second Industrial Revolution.

When Google fails? Yahooo!

by teamgpt June 10, 2013
written by teamgpt

I’ve always had this question in my mind. Which search engine do people use if Google fails?. According to the latest study of Chitika , Google users do not find what you seek try again first on Yahoo and Ask.com and then Bing.

The following graph, we can see the percentages of search engines that Google users use when they find something wrong with the Google Search:

when google fails - people look at yahoo and ask

The study took 40,000 users who searched the same and looked at where they went when the result on Google was not satisfactory or when Google was down (although that never happens). Surprisingly, the data showed that very few Google users, used Bing as first alternate, and the high regard they have to Ask, and Yahoo.

49.5% of the people searched Yahoo, the 30.29% in Ask, and only 16.4% in Bing. Numbers do look strange eh? :)

What is Facebook Vanity URLs? do I need one? what’s the use?

by teamgpt June 9, 2013
written by teamgpt

A vanity URL is created to point to something to which it is related and indicated in the name of the URL. In many cases this is done by a company to point to a specific product or advertising campaign microsite. In theory, vanity URLs are creatively linked to something making them easier to remember than a more random link.

On the other hand, they’re becoming so big so fast too. Almost may social networks provide vanity URL’s for the users.. Checkout my twitter URL its twitter.com/thesharath. Not very long ago, google started Google profiles which also provides your own vanitly URL. For example: http://www.google.com/profiles/sharathgrao, plus you also get to customize what shows on the page and link it with your online identities (websites you are on)….

As of now, most public profiles on Facebook are of the form facebook.com/profile.php?id=<some_number> or facebook.com/people/{name}/<some_id> but starting Saturday or Friday night depending on your Time zone, Facebook has announced to give a username for all Facebook profiles. So the new Facebook URL will be something like facebook.com/<Your_Name>.

Why is this useful?
Your new Facebook URL is like your personal destination, or home, on the Web. People can enter a Facebook username as a search term on Facebook or a popular search engine like Google or yahoo for example, which will make it much easier for people to find friends with common names.

Really? i’m not looking for friends, i’m a business kinda person.. will this help me too?
Yup, it’ll help you for sure.. Here are few useful tips why you need one..

– Short, easy-to-remember and often looks good on your business cards.
– Instant traffic for your business website with a facebook URL linked to it
– Facebook has over 200 million users, so it’ll help you promote your business too
– Search engines would crawl your sites more faster (thinking you’re popular tooo)
– It looks cool – facebook.com/thesharath is much cooler than facebook.com/people/Sharath-G-Rao/567291353

Facebook usernames will be available in basic text forms, and you can only choose a single username for your profile and for each of the Pages that you administer. Your username must be at least five characters in length and only include alphanumeric characters (A-Z, 0-9), or a period or full stop (“.”). If you want one too then head to facebook.com/username
now…

Think carefully about the username you choose. Once it’s been selected, you won’t be able to change or transfer it. If you signed up for a Facebook Page after May 31 or a user profile after today at 3 p.m. EDT, you may not be able to sign up for a username immediately to prevent abuse or “squatting” on names.

I just got mine now … see facebook.com/thesharath :) cool eh?

Google now Tracks FedEX Packages

by teamgpt April 10, 2013
written by teamgpt

Try Googling a FedEX package tracking number on Google and guess what shows up on the Google Search Results page?

On the Top Search Result, you would get an option to view the FedEX package location details.

Here is how it looks:
fedex packages

Clicking on the top result would take you directly to the FedEX results page with all the delivery information. We’re not sure, if this is a partnership with FedEX or just another Google Magic :)

Amit, thanks for the tip.
