YQL now supports microformats

by teamgpt January 9, 2014
written by teamgpt

What is microformat?

A microformat is a web-based[1] approach to semantic markup that seeks to re-use existing XHTML and HTML tags to convey metadata[2] and other attributes. This approach allows information intended for end-users (such as contact information, geographic coordinates, calendar events, and the like) to also be automatically processed by software.

Microformats are the revolution that still has to happen. The idea is great: use information that is already published on the web and mark it up to be reusable in other ways. The classic example given in almost any microformats presentation is how you can turn a person’s details into a downloadable vCard by adding a few spans with the right classes around the appropriate text content.

Since we publish in HTML anyways, it was deemed a good idea to add this extra layer of semantic goodness to allow software to extract structured data instead of having to write an extra API. Adding microformats is not hard (although there are disputes about the readiness of microformats in terms of internationalization and accessibility) – the consumption however is.

Naturally the best place for this to happen is the browser – the idea was to have the user agent recognize information in microformats and allow the user to re-use this information where it makes sense. Whilst there are several extensions for Firefox that do exactly that, none of the out-of-the-box browser configurations are microformat-aware.

Which means that if we wanted to re-use microformats, we need to write our own parser. Luckily enough this has been done for us in various languages. The pain is still to convert them into other formats once we retrieve them (not to mention the problem of not being able to pull them from a resource on another domain via Ajax).

Yahoo! likes microformats. We’ve been sneaking them into a lot of our products and we’ve already started to make their discovery and re-use a lot easier in SearchMonkey.

Now, with the release of YQL, we’ve gone a step further. We took the content-mixing capabilities of Pipes, and added a SQL-style language and REST interface to access directly without having to paint your data retrieval and filtering flow.

After discussing the microformats capabilities of SearchMonkey with the YQL team over a mug of coffee at my last visit stateside, we decided to see if it would be possible to get YQL to retrieve microformat data from web documents. I am proud to say that my wish has been granted.

If you check the YQL console you’ll find that in the "Available Tables" section you can now see "Microformats" (spookily enough with my blog as the demo example). Together with the public REST API you can use this to retrieve information, filter it down, and return it as XML or JSON for re-use.

webmaster tools

I recently noticed a new feature in Google Webmaster tools, its called Keyword Significance grader  tool.

It basically is a horizontal bar showing the significance of a keyword in your site. Before Google webmaster tools only listed the top 200 keywords for your site. Now you can know which keyword is highly performing in your site and which keyword is the least performing.

Here is a screenshot of how it looks:

Thinking of using an XML or HTML sitemap? confusing?

by teamgpt October 9, 2013
written by teamgpt

I know most beginner bloggers really think if we need to use a HTML or an XML sitemap for the site? It is really confusing which one to use too. Here is a video of Matt Cutts (head of Google webspam) answered a question about HTML and XML sitemaps and what is preferred.

If you use HTML sitemap, Google will find your pages more quickly and this maybe a useful addition for visitors too. And an XML sitemap in not that relevant for visitors but Google would surely crawl your site but this does not guarantee that all the pages are indexed by Google.. Matt shows that if you really have to choose between an HTML and an XML sitemap you can best start with an HTML sitemap, this is because its useful for both Google and for visitors to your site.

How to: Add a simple Facebook share button to your Blog posts in 5 simple steps

by teamgpt October 9, 2013
written by teamgpt
There’s a plugin for everything nowadays in wordpress but some plug-in just doesn’t work like we want them to work.. One of them is the Facebook share-me plugin. Although it gives you a counter just like the digg button, sometimes its really hard to customize and share it in the place where we want it on the page. So, I figured out a way to add the Facebook share-me without a plugin and you can add it in 5 simple steps in your blogger or Wordpress blog posts.

Things you need:

1. A Facebook share button, if you don’t have one use the image link below. [facebook share ]

http://usegpt.in/img/share-me-fb-button.jpg

Here is how you can add Facebook share-me in just 5 simple steps:

For Blogger blogs:

1. Write your blog post

write a blogger post

2. Publish it

publish post

3. Now copy the published blog URL and Edit the published page again. [Eg. http://sharath-g.blogspot.com/2009/10/testing-facebook-share-plugin.html]

copy link blog post

4. Grab this code and put in your URL

<a href="http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=ENTERYOURPOSTURLHERE"><img src="http://usegpt.in/img/share-me-fb-button.jpg" alt="share to facebook button"></a>

5: Add the code to your post and republish the blog :)

Now try adding using the Facebook share button.

done adding facebook shareme

For Wordpress blogs:

If you are adding Facebook share me to your Theme file, just add:

<a href="http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=<?php echo 'http://' . $_SERVER['HTTP_HOST'] . $_SERVER['REQUEST_URI'] . ' ' . $_SERVER['QUERY_STRING']; ?>"><img src="http://usegpt.in/img/share-me-fb-button.jpg" alt="share to facebook button"></a>

This below script is a PHP script which automatically inputs the URL of the page.

“<?php echo 'http://' . $_SERVER['HTTP_HOST'] . $_SERVER['REQUEST_URI'] . ' ' . $_SERVER['QUERY_STRING']; ?>“

Now isn’t that easy? :) Do you also have any such easy tips and tricks? Share it with us by posting comments below or you can contact us to send a tip!

YouTube’s Own Video Editor

by teamgpt July 10, 2013
written by teamgpt

One of the questions that I had been asking is ‘why Google does not have a cloud-based program to edit and modify videos on YouTube’. And now, YouTube Now (finally) has a new simple, video editor online.

With the editor you can easily create new videos with pieces from your videos you’ve uploaded on the youtube channels. You drag the desired video programs in the timeline and for each video separately, you can edit certain parts of the video and cut\copy and edit instantly!

As for the audio, you can choose from a number of standard songs of famous and lesser known artists.

Here is a video, on how to edit videos on the cloud:

The editor can be found at youtube.com/editor
