Google Docs: Upload multiple files, fast!

by teamgpt October 9, 2014
written by teamgpt

google docs

Google announced, just like the gmail uploader now Google docs also comes with a flash uploader, which helps you to upload your files fast!

Google released an application for Windows that lets you upload files to Google Docs by using drag and drop. The application is more like a sample for Google Docs API, but it’s pretty useful if you want to upload a lot of documents. There’s also an option to add “Send to Google Docs” to the contextual menu so you can upload files directly from Windows Explorer.

The application can be downloaded from there and it requires .NET Framework 2.0.

This feature is another addition to Google docs, just like  how to upload files via email to Google docs.

Google tips and tricks: Using both XML and HTML sitemaps is Good

by teamgpt October 9, 2014
written by teamgpt

Always wondered which sitemap to use? XML or HTML? Well, here is a video of Matt Cutts (head of Google webspam) answered a question about HTML and XML sitemaps and what is preferred.

If you use HTML sitemap, Google will find your pages more quickly and this maybe a useful addition for visitors too. And an XML sitemap in not that relevant for visitors but Google would surely crawl your site but this does not guarantee that all the pages are indexed by Google.. Matt shows that if you really have to choose between an HTML and an XML sitemap you can best start with an HTML sitemap, this is because its useful for both Google and for visitors to your site.

Here is the official video below:

Google Warns About Noscript Element

by teamgpt July 10, 2014
written by teamgpt

In a discussion on the Google Webmaster forum Googler John Mueller warns for the use of the noscript element. This element can be used in combination with Javascript in order to display information when the browser does not support scripting or it is disabled by the user.

John indicates that the use of the noscript tag suspect happens with search engines because the element in the past has been often abused by spammers.

  • Serving a page of HTML text to search engines, while showing a page of images or Flash to users.
  • Serving different content to search engines than to users.

In 2006 it was said by a representative of Google, a noscript element that links will be followed up with Google but no further value attributes will be added.

Facebook Compared to a Country

by teamgpt July 10, 2014
written by teamgpt

Ever wondered what if Facebook was a country? What if Facebook had an economy? Here is a site called Visual Economics, has created a Infograph on ‘what if Facebook was a country‘.

Facebook economy

There are over 550,000 applications that are used on Facebook. 70% of users use the Facebook site’s applications. There are millions of application developers on Facebook. Zynga, a leading developer generated $ 250 million in 2009 to a estimated profit between 80 to 150 million dollars.

The most popular Facebook applications are:

  • Zynga
  • Rock You!
  • Arts Electric
  • CrowdStar
  • Playdom
  • Causes
  • Slide
  • 6 Waves
  • Topzy
  • iLike
  • MindJolt
  • RIM

Facebook Pages

There are more than 1500000 pages of Facebook active. The average value of a fan is estimated at $ 136.38. Extrapolating this figure, many pages of celebrities would be worth huge sums:

  • Michael Jackson, with 13.3 million fans, would have a page with a $ 1.8 billion.
  • Family Guy with 9.5 million fans, have a page with a value of 1.3 billion.
  • Lady Gaga and Barack Obama have 9.1 million fans for the pages of a $ 1.2 billion each.
  • Vin Diesel with 9,000,000 fans, have a page with a value of 1.1 billion dollars.
  • Starbucks with 8.2 million fans have a page with a value of 1.1 billion dollars.
  • South Park with 6.2 million fans have a page with a value of 845 million dollars.

The most popular pages on Facebook include:

  • Obama
  • Lady Gaga
  • Jackson
  • Family Guy
  • Vin Diesel
  • Megan Fox
  • House
  • Twilight Saga
  • Starbucks

Users

There are over 500 million users of Facebook. 200 million users will be on site daily, averaging 55 minutes per day. If these users were working for $ 5 an hour instead of going on Facebook, they collectively would gain $ 916000000 per day.

Advertise

In the first quarter of 2010, 176 billion ads were posted on Facebook, 16% of display advertising market. Facebook says that its advertisers have quadrupled since 2009.

If Facebook were a country, it would be the third most populous in the world after China and India.

Today, the value of Facebook is estimated between 7.9 – 11 billion dollars.
