I’m sure many of you have tried to add your WordPress blog into Google Webmaster Tools but failed to verify the blog since you cannot add meta tags, neither you can upload an HTML file since yours is a free WordPress blog.

Here’s a way if you really wish to add your blog into Google Webmaster Tools in few simple steps:

  1. First of all, you would need to use any of Google’s services; to get you a Google account. So get it ready, if you already have it, and then login to Google Webmaster Tools,
  2. Also, login to your WordPress admin panel. Once you’re into both sites, then first add your blog, for this you’ll see a “Add a site” link inside Google Webmaster Tools main page.
  3. Tip: Add your blog without www first, then with www. Example: http:// blog-address.wordpress.com then again add http://www. blog-address.wordpress.com…
First one is without www and you’ll be asked to verify your blog and Google will give you a Meta tag. In the drop box, select HTML File, then Google will give you a long filename with .html extension, example:google0cdyek69fa2bd88f.html

  4. Now copy this filename and come back to your wordpress admin panel. Go to the ‘Pages’ menu on the left and click on ‘Add new’. Paste the filename in the post title field, don’t worry if the URL below is changed to a dash, let it be. Inside the post body, you may simply paste the filename again, or leave it blank, it doesn’t matter.
  5. Since we don’t want this new page to appear in your blog’s navigation panel, on the right, in the Attributes field, choose Page Parent – choose any other already existing page as parent and now save this new page. Go to Webmaster Tools tab and now click on ‘Verify‘ button
  6. Done!

Now you have added your blog, and also verified it. Similarly add your blog with a www now. (So if someone types your blog’s URL with a www, then it will show up in search history pane in Google Webmaster Tools) … Have fun :)
